Commercial and Industrial Site Remediation Services Process
There are typically four phases in the study and remediation of environmental contamination: Phase I environmental site assessment, Phase II environmental site assessment, Corrective Action Plan development, and clearance testing or long-term monitoring.
Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) is a historical records review and brief field visit to assess the potential for environmental contamination based on prior site use.
Phase II Environmental Site Assessment is a more comprehensive assessment, often involving collection of soil and water samples to test for the presence of hazardous substances.
Corrective Action Plans are developed when Phase II investigations identify contamination and specify actions to be undertaken to clean up the contaminants confirmed during the Phase II ESA. Remediation services under a Corrective Action Plan can be divided into two categories: on-site and off-site. On-site services involve cleaning up the contamination at the site where it was found. Off-site services involve transporting the contaminated material to a treatment facility for cleaning or to an approved storage facility for long-term storage.
Typically there is clearance testing or long-term monitoring following implementation of the corrective action plan. Clearance testing is intended to be a one-time event that confirms cleanup actions taken under the Corrective Action Plan were successful.
Long-term monitoring may be required to ensure that the site remains clean after remediation.
